10 Quotes

Here are ten quotes that have caught my eye in the past few months.

1. “What a gifted child is, in many ways, is a gifted learner. And what a gifted adult is, is a gifted doer. And those are quite separate domains of achievement.”
-Malcolm Gladwell

2. “No, I don’t like work. I had rather laze about and think of all the fine things that can be done. I don’t like work — no man does — but I like what is in the work, the chance to find yourself. Your own reality — for yourself, not for others — what no other man can ever know. They can only see the mere show, and never tell what it really means.”
-Joseph Conrad in The Heart Of Darkness

3. “…if you report an atrocity carried out by guerrillas, all you need is one hearsay witness. You talk about torture carried out by an American military officer, you’re going to need videotapes.”
-Noam Chomsky

4. “It’s only bribery if it’s not enough.”
-Unknown

5. “Just because you dress [provocatively] does not make you a whore — but you are wearing a whore’s uniform.”
-Dave Chappelle

6. “The mark of greatness is when everything before you is obsolete, and everything after you bears your mark.”
-Dave Chappelle

7. “Sometimes it takes a while for a man to find himself.”
-Chinatown

8. “Men are like cats—they are always on the prowl and just come in for food.”
-8 1/2

9. “I had started on a voyage of discovery, only to find that it was I who was being discovered.”
-Tete-Michel Kpomassie in An African In Greenland

10. “A man receiving charity practically always hates his benefactor.”
-George Orwell in Down and Out in Paris and London

#10 is spot on. asking someone to do you a favor will earn you goodwill than doing a favor for them.

Noam Chomsky is a hack. I take it you never wore a uniform and served something greater than yourself?

Yes way, the logic follows that if a group has little or no respect or status, it will take less to cast them in poor light. If a group that has been accorded much status and respect is accused, the call for evidence is that much greater.

How does that not make sense?

No matter how valued a person may be, if they commit an atrocity, the burden of proof and the consequences should approach equality.

Will it? No.

That’s the injustice.

9. “I had started on a voyage of discovery, only to find that it was I who was being discovered.”
