True I’m a slacker, but sometimes I get work done. I just finished the rough draft of book number two, which I’ve been working on since around March. Editing takes a while so I’m thinking it’ll be done early 2009. Then I take a look at the world map on my wall and pick a place.

Bang is closing in on its 500th copy sold. It will probably happen sometime next month (it’s already been a year). I’ve been considering going the published route with this second book, but the process to get published seems so long, drawn-out, and discouraging. Literary agents and publishing houses take 2-6 months to get in touch with your query letter and after that it’s no shorter than a year by the time you see it on bookshelves. Plus most authors don’t earn anything beyond their advance, which I speculate is $5,000 - $15,000 for a never-published author.

My bet is I’ll stick with the indie route. It’s serving me well so far.

Do it your way. That’s the way you’ve been going with most things you do, and by the time the book goes through a long publishing process you might have lost momentum on the topic and not care about it anymore.

500 is not bad for a person who started out just blogging. Great book by the way. your a great writer so if you see books in your future, maybe you can start hanging out at spots taht publishers hang out at and start fucking an assitant or something, but if you plan on writing more books… make it official.

I guess people dont spread the word about your book because they just want to keep the lessons for themselves so they can have an edge over everyone else. Otherwise, Bang! would have sold a lot better this far. By the way, what’s your second book about?

cane you do the whole indie route thing and then a year later apply for publication? such as applying for publication of Bang now?

You should self-publish your book on to Amazons Kindle…..there are people who would be willing to pay a lower price for an ebook edition. It’s also more convenient than a paper book.

After all the work that goes into it (oh god, the editing and re-writes), I still vote giving the traditional route a try, esp with all the things you have going for you (successful blog, good numbers on Bang, newsletter subscribers, interesting genre, etc). That’s a hellva query letter right there!

There are differing opinions about publishing houses being cool with self-published books (as in, buying them after the face), but I hear a lot of nays in that regard.

I know it may seem like it takes too long, but having an agent to navigate and get you MORE money as well as encourage & work with you as a writer for the long haul is invaluable.
