Wow. Some of these comments kinda make me angry. I agree with the person above me. We are all human. We all make mistakes. We all love our countries. I love America, yet I love Germany, where much of my family origanates. I dont know what they teach in your countries educational system, but here in america, equality is very important. I would help any one in need if they came to my door, dispite race, language, social status. Thats how I was raised, and as an American at that. Yes, I agree that there are many ignorant people in America, but there are just as many in your country, because when it comes down to it we are all the same. I think that this whole article is hypocritical. Differnt people from differnt countries are claiming that another country is just awful, while saying some very hurtful things. This is all coming from a 14 year old american.

Ok so im a 15 year old AMERICAN living in Germany . Not by choice. But being away from America and visiting all of the other countries in Europe has made me realize how fucking amazing America is… Other countries might call us ignorant but we call it confidence. America has been through hell and back but we always bounce back. And that’s what makes our country the best. I’m proud to be an American. No matter what yall ignorant bitches say ;)

I’m sorry but I have to disagree on the XXL comment and the celebrities one. So, you’re saying that we should take up everything just because the founding fathers said so? America is so freaking polluted already! You’re saying that we should take up beutiful places like Yosemite and the Grand Canyon for big houses?

Secondly, Americans need to learn to mind their own freaking businesses. I have never once heard someone say in an interview that they love to have boob shots or gotcha moments. Tabloids are an invasion of privacy when used in such ways.

America is a lie. People come here to look for better life only to find it expensive, unhospitable, and lazy.

And it does seem we worship celebrities, we have to hear everything that going on with them. Just turn on your TV or the read the newspaper.

Where a lot of Europeans live in apartments and not in houses, a lot Americans think it is so wrong to live in apartment it has to be a house, or we need this or that. A lot of us seem like we can’t live without our TVs. Compare to a lot of other countries, we have really big kitchens, refrigerator and so on. A lot of these stereotypes we put on ourselves, we have a lot of crappy reality shows that makes us look bad to the world.

War mongers we are not. Most people in other countries won’t understand this. We are one of the very few countries that will stand up for ourselves in a time of need. It has become apparent to the world that if one stands up for their country they are seen as evil, creators of war and so on and so on.

If we don’t want people to see us in such a bad light, then we should watch what we do.

Hey America-haters, you know that Apple product you have, Youtube, or Facebook? Well, they were all invented by Americans. The truth is, we aren’t dumb, some of us may be ignorant, but our country has some of the smartest and life-changing people in the world.
Every counrty has its faults! You cannot deny that. Steryotypes do NOT represent a country as a whole! That’s just the way it is.
I’m American, and proud. When I hear a patriotic song, I sometimes cry. And that’s because I think of all the people who have died for our rights, and how happy I am to live in this beautiful counrty.

all this bickering misses the point with stereotypes, which is that they cannot be changed by argumentation!

Everyone making use of any given stereotype knows that it is not total truth but a generalization, so the personal opinion of anyone does not solve anything.

Stereotypes are a product of global diversity and therefore they always contain a small amount of truth, and also a small amount of cultural identification. So, for Germany AND the USA are democratic countries, we all should be able to grasp the concept of majority supervision, meaning, a stereotype will always be technically true, if it goes for the majority of a culture.

Negatively connotated stereotypes can therefore only be overcome by most people getting rid of those stereotypical habits.

Of course this is a long term process, just think of the fact that Germany stopped being racist 66yrs ago! But that is the only way to get rid of stereotypes. (To speed up the process produce new stereotypes to replace the old ones)

This is all very theoretical and i know it doesn’t help much in this discussion, but think of government elections: you have one voice amongst millions of people, so how much does your voice count? – In the eyes of every one who (like me) believes in democracy, it counts for all of them!
So, if you do not like being offended by people from other countries, the best thing you could do is NOT DO the things described in the offense and hope that others will follow your lead!

Furthermore, I would like to recommend all of you, for the purpose of enhancing the speed of the process of falsifying stereotypes, to check your own stereotypes synchronically, meaning, check whether they are still as true as they were some years ago!

No American living today committed FirstNation genocide, and no German living today sent any Jew into a concentration camp (least I hope those who did reached hell by now -if you believe in such a thing)!

Oh, and if you’d still like to hear my personal opinion:
I think all the described stereotypes are a mere result of cultural differences – which nobody can be blamed for, even if they were true.
