I noticed that we play completely different games at the beach. In the U.S. the popular beach games are frisbee, volleyball, and throwing the football. In South America it’s paddle ball, some weird horseshoe game I can’t figure out, and kicking the soccer ball. I don’t think it is possible to buy a frisbee in South America.

We tend to be early risers when going to the beach to catch the noon sun, but here the beach doesn’t peak until 5PM. If you go out around noon there will only be old people. From a skin cancer and just general comfort perspective, it really doesn’t make much sense to go out on the beach when the sun’s UV rays are strongest. 5PM sun will get you plenty crisped with that SPF-0 oil I see American girls use.

I think rather than skin cancer worries, going to the beach at 5pm has to do with partying until the morning each day.

Is the horseshoe game you refer to the one with the wooden round pieces you throw? It’s called “tejo” and I think that the idea is that whoever gets closer to the smallest one wins. Frisbees used to be very popular at one point, and you could also see some loners with boomerangs. Our version of the American beach football is the “tocata”, some sort of beach rugby.

That and the sun is MUCH strongs in the south. They used to tell us it was because of our proximity to the hole in the ozone layer, not sure if that’s actually true but you burn a hell of a lot faster.

Jo, you’re absolutely right about the sun in the southern hemisphere, and the Ozone hole. Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. And the Ozone Layer is the only thing filtering out the UV rays which cause sunburn and cancer.
