You might want to add a correction to your article — the winner is Beija-Flor (which means hummingbird) not Baixa Flor (which doesn’t exist, as a word or a samba school). :)

I only got to see the parade in person once, on my last Carnaval in Rio, in 97. I had spent my whole life catching it from the TV, but it doesn’t compare to being there. My dad was invited for a friend’s “camarote” (box seats, with catered food and drinks), and we saw a good 5 hours of it from there — we where so close to the action! It was incredible seeing it in person — the pictures and the videos doesn’t do justice, I’m sure you can agree with that too.

When my uncle was younger he always participated in the parade (a costume costs more than a grand), and he would throw his costume out to the audience, having only his briefs left by the end of it.
