A “true” photographer using a P&S is like a “true” writer using feather and ink. Too cumbersome.

alright, you're absolutely right. and i commend you for being the master of your domain or craft and making the most of everything. what would charlie chaplan do with the film cameras of today!?

but it's like an electric guitar. you take the best you can get to produce the best. i'm an amateur photographer and i can't imagine going without digital.

Calling me "not a real photographer" is simply accurate. I do it as a hobby and I'm not very good at it, I know that as well as anyone. Maybe I never will be, but you have to try to get there.

Sorry the sight of the dude with the SLR is annoying but there's a reason, of course: you can take pretty pictures with them!

I've taken great shots with my phone, compact p&s, toy cameras, medium format cameras, 35mm slrs and digital slrs. As far as tools go, I'd never give up on the DSLR. Adjustments that require multiple menus on the p&s can be made instantly with a flick of the thumb on my 6 year old DSLR, not to mention the difference a real lens makes.

I have no problem carrying it around. Then again, I'm in the 5% who use it to make money.

I do agree that way too many suburban parents have been choosing the DSLR since Best Buy began to carry them. But they are easy to spot, and their photos are even more obvious.

<em>books's last blog post: <a href='http://penisinarowboat.wordpress.com/2009/01/27/the-anti-stranger/' rel="nofollow">The anti-stranger</a>.</em>

i have to agree the disposable allows you to be spontaneous with a girl. you could just happen to see it in the store and buy it for "who knows what"

It's pretty hard to get cycling gear without advertising nowadays, at least in my area. It always seems to have something.

Hear ya man. Just went to Spain for a few months and so many tourists are lugging big-arsed SLRs around. I don't take photos for art-work I just do it to capture memories and my cybershot (won in a competition) did the job easily.

I don't know about the "low light" reasoning. So you drop over a grand on a camera to take a couple dozen low lighting pictures a year?

The photos by craig at http://www.travelvice.com are the best i've seen, yet he uses an inexpensive camera. DSLR's are toys for 95% of people who own them.

Great post. My friend just broke up with his girl last week, and what's the first thing he does? He goes out and buys a 1,400 SLR. He doesn't even know how to use the thing and takes it everywhere with him. If anyone asks, I'm going to tell them he's a Chinese tourist.

You can write just as well with a pen and paper as with a keyboard -- but a disposable camera doesn't produce the same results as a professional one. This post is absurd.

I don't understand the point being made in this post. More people are carrying DSLRs because #1 they are now affordable, and 2# because they take the best pictures. What makes you think they are trying to impress anyone?

Would anyone prefer to carry a Sony Walkman CD player over a 160gig Ipod?

I love the DSLR hobbyists who have so much equipment that they "need" a dedicated backpack to carry it all. It's even better when you spot whole gangs of these geeks around town, all taking photos of the same statues and sleeping homeless people.

The sentiment's right in some areas, but not here. A good example would be weightlifting, where people like to use all kinds of exercises to target specific muscles, and avoid the simplest and most important ones, like squats.

I hate how people have to be such a specialist about things, like the dude who buys biking gear with ads on it, to look like a Tour de France racer.

Hey, hey, hey, I am one of those people with a huuuge DSLR camera, and I am VERY proud of that :P

No, but I know what you mean. I have thought the same thing already. Bulky 'professional' cameras have now become commonplace, and many self-proclaimed photographers will judge you more on the equipment you use than on the actual photographs you make.

Some of my favorite pictures from the many, many I have taken were shot with my old point and shoot camera. But the thing is that a DSLR, when you really know how to use it and don't have it just for show, really offers you more creative control over your pictures since it allows you to control things such as exposure, white balance, etc., etc., etc.

I don't know, I still think real photographers continue getting automatic respect. You can easily differentiate the authentic ones from the fake ones; their attitudes are usually much less pretentious.

<em>Rita's last blog post: <a href='http://keepablogalive.blogspot.com/2009/01/its-official-i-was-weird-child.html' rel="nofollow">it's official, i was a weird child</a>.</em>

I would guess most people using a DSLR aren't trying to impress you. They're trying to take pictures of their life so they have memories. Sometimes it isn't about "art". I have both a regular SLR, and a digital SLR, and while I appreciate the romantic "art" aspect of film, my DSLR takes pretty kicking pictures.

Your pen and paper allow you a full range of control over your writing. A disposable camera gives you no control over your image other than where the camera is pointing. DSLRs give you control, something all true artists demand over their medium.
