I'm surprised. Usually I'm slightly annoyed at criticism that you level at the world when you go outside of game and making fun of SWPL, but spot on on slumdog. I thought I was going to see a masterpiece, but the whole thing was contrived and did absolutely nothing to explain the human condition, which is what good movies do. There were a TON better movies last year, like Eagle Eye.

Props on the review.

Sat through this steaming pile of horsecrap yesterday and was astonished. I expected it to be bad, but not THAT bad. I would say it's a mere cartoon, a completely inconsequential puff piece, but it's much worse than that. It portrays India's crushing poverty with such a heavy, blind hand that it should make anyone with a shred of empathy feel incredibly fucking insulted. The worst film to win Best Picture in recent memory.

I agree with Kassy; though hugely flawed, Gran Torino was probably the best of the worst and should have won.

I liked the movie alot, and I don't think it was meant at all to say THIS IS INDIA to the world. It was just about those two brothers, growing up, and how THEY were poor. As far as the things Roosh didn't like, well that's a taste of Bollywood. There so much sh*t I loved that they showed in this film. Bombay being changed to Mumbai, the call center, etc.

Agree with most of the things Roosh says. Another major flaw in the movie is the way the TV host talks to the boy. It is extremely insulting and noone would speak that way on a TV programme let alone real life. Also, policemen would never beat up a boy to find out if he's cheated on a TV show. Ridiculous.

They are just children and they are not portrayed as children. True, they lost their innocence early but the director didn't have the skill to show any childlike qualities.

Regarding speaking English.. slum kids do learn to speak English but their accent is very different. In the movie Dev spoke with an upper class Indian accent.

It is a stupid movie. I'm cool with it winning the cinematography Oscar, and I guess the soundtrack one, but the fact that it sweeped the Oscars is ridiculous. It was nowhere near deserving of Best Picture.

Kassy -

I thought Rev Road did a great job capturing the nuances of a relationship gone cold.

As for Gran Torino...I did *like* Eastwood's character, everyone loves a vigilante, but I couldn't help but think that he is a one-dimensional character while watching. I mean, he is basically the same character in "the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" as he is in "Dirty Harry" as he is in "Million Dollar Baby" as he is in "Gran Torino". I think he's an above average director, it's just his acting is weak.

Anyway...Easter Parade...great book. It's one that grows on you, kind of like having a friend you never really cared for then realizing one day that he/she's the best one you have. One scene shows the main female character married to a typical beta male. He has problems performing in the sack and basically hates himself and her b/c of it. He constantly asks about her past, better lovers in order to reassure his betaness. Yates, through Rev Road and Easter Parade, has amazing insights into the nuances of relationships.

And haven't seen Elegy yet but I've heard it's good.

Poor analisys.

Nobody should be forced to like a movie, but 80% of your points are bullshit, roosh.

Nobody here mentioned that the director of the movie was Danny Boyle, who always made his movies away from the mainstream, and most of them kick ass.

And it was full of references to Bollywood cinema. My only disappointment was that they didn't all start dancing in the middle, only in the end of the film.

another film depicting common stereotypes on India, made so that whites can circle-jerk around it. First off, a British guy made this film, which sent alarm bells ringing through my head. It is the British, after all, who have done so much to perpetuate the stereotypes of India. They also, btw, brought about the deaths of tens of millions in India through famine thanks to their hoarding and callous disregard for the brown folks they ruled over. Secondly, when I saw the typical Muslim appeasement slant to it, I knew that this film was just following a standard formula.

Boyle and his ilk would be better served focusing their attention on Europe and America, because the current economic collapse will bring a poverty to these countries far severe than that of India. In India, family and group structures are still present even amongst the very poor. In the West, England especially, there is division in all classes, there is a distinct lack of principles or discipline, and there will be utter chaos among the poor that may end up reflecting upon the elite.

Time moves in a cyclical fashion and we are about to see the end of Britain, possibly the West. I wonder if any Indian filmmaker will make a movie on the plight of England's abject poor...that would be a curious one indeed.

Chuck--
Hey there...I did a whole post on my top films of the year...and actually The Reader was one of my favorite films of the year...And I put Rev Road in my Top Ten. It was superbly acted and a really interesting look life in the 50s...the constraints...the dynamic...all of it. Depressing but in such a realistic way.

I didn't think Eastwood was Dirty Harry ish at all in Gran Torino...I thought it was way more of a coming of age tale. An old man who cant get along with his real family ends up bonding and joining the family of people he normally would be racist against.

It was more about growing as a person...and the ending...that was giving up something for someone in the purest way.

I loved the movie. It just hit me in a real way...Felt raw.

But there were so many movies that should have been nominated that no one has even talked about.

Sad really. You know?

I would love to hear more about Easter Parade. I'm a huge Philip Roth fan and I feel I would probably enjoy Parade as well.

By the way...have you seen Elegy?

Honestly I like City Of God more. To me the interweaving of the kid's past memories to his answer was a good device and oscar worthy...hehe!

After i've watched the movie i realized...this...movie..SUCKS! It's just another feel good chick flick for the INNOCENT MASSES! What a letdown.

Dude! you could've post other interesting stuff! All you've been doing is bitch and whine about...this movie? Your becoming a letdown dude!

roosh,

i just gave a cursory look over your comments. I think you've got poor taste. you fail to realize that the film is a feel good film, meant to cast light on the notorious slums of Mumbai and other areas of India. Those slums weren't even the worst. Also, the unrealistic nature of the film is deliberate. Having each question match his life perfectly is not realistic, nor is him guessing the right answer at the end because "it was written".

so, maybe SM is not worth watching more than once or twice. But it's not a surprise why it is successful and it is not a bad film.

roosh,

i just gave a cursory look over your comments.
gotta agree with roosh here. people were telling how great this movie was, but I was waiting for it to end for the last 30 minutes. Girl gets with guy at the end when there was no sexual chemistry at all? C'mon. For awhile in the middle it seemed like it might've been the next City of God, but it wasn't. See City of God instead. Doesn't bullshit at all, and that will blow you away.
