This is lame. Why do you always have to be in dialogue. I love listening to good music. When I'm in a car, I and many friends would preffer listening to a great CD over conversation, not because weare socially challenged at all. We all have many many friends and get lots of women. We just love our music. I play many instruments though so I'm a big music fan. This thread to me would almost be the equivalent of me saying you are lame for trying to pick up women.

Or...people use iPods to avoid listening to all the bullshit -- i.e., metro announcements, kids crying, homeless people asking for change, general incompetence of the American public. I completely disagree with you on this issue, and I am proud iPod Nano owner.

MOST OF YOU MISSED THE POINT!!!!! The post is not about hating on Ipod or music in general, was it that difficult to read and understand it? Stop taking ownership of Ipod so personal.....

Listen to your Ipods, and stuff your ears to fade out everything around your cherished personal bubble, just dont hate when you go everywher else in the world and everyone hates Americans because we dont know shit, and cant socialize with others......everyone here is so closeminded.

I don't believe in the theory of friendship where you have to be in some deep conversation every time you meet. Sometimes just sitting next to the other person is plenty. In many ways, you could argue these are true friends.

completely agree.
I understand most people are just a product of today's world, without their own mind and character. But listening to music non-stop in a crappy sound is just over the top.

I am a musician (classical) and i love gadgets and technology, but i wouldn't put myself to listening with earphones the whole day, i love silence in music and in life, it gives the perspective to everything else.

People who so commited to their phones and mp3 players don't seem to feel secure by themselves in public, they have to draw a barrier that unconnects them from the world.
Now, a couple together (friends or bf&gf) separated by their gadgets is just pathetic!

Plus, if she shoves her ear plugs back in you know she isn't interested.

If she starts yapping your ear off...Game on.

Great qualifier, and quick too.

No wasted time.

speakeasy,

"But then again, and this is just a thought, couldn’t an Ipod be an opportunity for an opener? If you tapped her on the shoulder and asked her what group she’s listening to, couldn’t that open up a conversation?"

Now your talking. Great opener.

Hate on American culture all you want, but the ipod does have some redeeming qualities. They have the most obscure shit listed under podcasts. You can start learning a language or listen to a translation of a thousand year old Persian text while driving/metro-ing/walking to work. Also, a lot of people have lectures for undergrad or professional school on their mp3 players. These are just a few examples I happen to have on mine, but they are pretty convenient and interesting.

hey there ho here... now everyone just calm down.

let's not hate on ipods because some people are rude.

cell phones and ipods carry unwritten rules of courtesy. they are useful and can improve life. for example, when i drive long distances i listen to my ipod through my car's radio. this way i can listen to cool podcasts that are free with no commercials. but i don't walk around work like some motherfuckers with my god damn headphones in. that pisses me off. it's extremely antisocial. the same goes for the cell phone. don't answer it around people. don't have your ringer on when you're with people. keep it in your shoe like me. on vibrate. it tickles!

But then again, and this is just a thought, couldn't an Ipod be an opportunity for an opener? If you tapped her on the shoulder and asked her what group she's listening to, couldn't that open up a conversation? Most people feel passionate about the music they listen to and enjoy talking about anything they are passionate about. If you could ask her in a way that didn't seen annoying, she just might want to tell you about the artist she's listening to and that conversation could lead to something. I admit, you have to have a little bit of guts to approach a girl who's got headphones on since that could be a signal of not wanting to be bothered, but my guess is that a good number of them love the artists on their ipods and want to tell people about them. And the more obscure and hipster the music is, the more passionate she probably feels about the band and wants to let you know how discreet and hip her taste in music is.

"Man just stop hating on people. If you want to demonstrate that talking to others is better than listening to your iPod, why don’t you just tell us how you had a stimulating conversation with whoever was next to you on the bus this morning?"

Decent point. But I think the underlying point of the Post is that things like Ipods make it more difficult for people to communicate.

Which to break it down, makes it more difficult to pick up on girls. The dynamic of Street Game has totally been changed by the Ipod (as well as the cell phone).

It is actually now a sub-set of Street Game; picking up girls on cells and with Ipods.

Much more difficult.

Most playboys just ignore the girl with the Ipod...to much work...too much potential to fail.

Maybe I will run a case study on it and crack the code.

There is nothing that can't be done, after all.

Also, I hate Ipods, nor have I even ever been in a place that sells them.

But I am old-school.

The first time I saw it I did a double take. A man and a woman, who were obviously together, wore headphones on their individual iPods at the same time.

It might make a bit of sense if the couple has been together for a long time.

I don't have much of a problem with iPods. I don't think I've ever been in a situation where someone was using an mp3 player when I wanted to speak with them.

Cell phones (particularly texting) bother me WAY more. People feel they ALWAYS have to check their messages or see who's calling. I started excluding friends of mine who feel they need to be more connected to their phone than to present company. It's just poor behavior.

Yup, you got it Roosh.. I especially think it's bizarre when people are riding the Metro or bus and have the headphones in... eventually we're all going to stop talking to each other completely outside of bars.. it's kind of scary!

I think I will start bothering people with iPod headphones in and see what happens..
