Idiocracy

You may have never heard of the movie Idiocracy because Fox has done all it can to not promote it when it was released last year.

The movie is about an average man and prostitute who hibernate for 500 years in a military pod experiment. When they wake up, the president-elect is a former porn star and the most popular television program is called Ouch My Balls, about a guy who keeps getting hit in the balls. The hibernators have become the two smartest humans on the planet now that the average IQ has dipped to around 50 points. Intelligent yuppies failed to procreate.

I suppose Fox didn’t want to publicize this movie because they would be making fun of the less-than-intellectual audience they entertain with such fine programming as Fox News and American Idol, but you can get the movie on DVD or download it using BitTorrent. It’s very funny, created by the same guy who made Office Space. Don’t read too many reviews because they give away a lot of the good jokes.

I like to argue that the dumbening of human beings has long ago begun. For ample evidence, go into any Walmart or highway rest stop.

I don’t think people are any dumber now than they were 50 years ago. The improvement in technology in the media has made MTV the new version of sitting around scratching your asshole. I think genetics pretty much dictates that idiots will sorely outnumber intelligent human beings anywhere you go. But yeah, that movie makes you think.

Roosh, what about?

A) Advances in technology
B) Advances in healthcare (pharmaceuticals, medical devices,)
C) IQ scores actually going up every decade

I would say that as a whole we are getting smarter not dumber.

good review of the idiocracy controversy here:

best to keep in mind that IQ will more than ever be the great wedge between the haves and the have-nots.

Bah. Idiocracy had some funny moments, but anyone who actually takes the premise seriously is a fool. It’s clear the writers didn’t really understand how natural selection really acts. Point 1: not everyone who is horny and irresponsible turns out to be actually stupid in terms of net cognitive skill. Point 2: intelligence is far from entirely inherited. And there’s far more problems with the movie’s main premise from there …

Thing is, I spent most of that movie pondering its flaws. The people in that movie are selectively idiotic: how do they somehow manage to maintain very advanced technology running, for instance? I know I’m supposed to suspend my disbelief, but the actual plot was so formulaic and dull that I became much more interested in the background.

TSM,

Here is a New York Times article that speaks of a scientific link of genetics and intelligence. This is one of many many articles about this.

I didn’t deny there was a genetic link to intelligence. What I deny is that intelligence is strictly a product of genetics – it’s also a product of other factors, like nutrition and lifestyle (activity that demands the use of your intellect increases your intelligence, not unlike exercise).

tsm, proof by assertion won’t stop the cascade of science that is slowly and inexorably illuminating just how much of g is heritable compared to environmental.

see here, for example:

http://www.gnxp.com/MT2/archives/001524.html

“The subjects for whom MRI scans were available partly overlapped with a sample of extended twin families from a large study on cognition4. In the latter study, we found a heritability of g of 0.86, which is consistent with previous reports.”

the old lies and obfuscations are crumbling faster than you think.

I’m sure that’s precisely the reason Fox didn’t hype the movie. Idiot humor only appeals to those liberal intellectuals that Fox despises, right?

Roissy, genetics can’t by itself adequately explain the Flynn effect, among other phenomena.

tsm, the flynn effect is interesting for a number of reasons (including psychometric artifacts of 1930s and 40s testing methodologies and interpolation of the theory to arrive at implausibly low mean IQ levels of 1890s americans in the 70 range. for an example of how implausible is the idea of retarded ancestors, check out this 8th grade exam from 1895: http://www.webenglishteacher.com/text/1895test.txt) but nonetheless irrelevant to discussions of how IQ affects socioeconomic status as the flynn effect rise in raw IQ tests scores in the 20th century was equally distributed across populations.

i.e., the flynn effect matters not for practical considerations of how IQ works to distance the right half of the bell curve from the left.

what’s more, the flynn effect has leveled off. for a good discussion of that and how the flynn effect is not the slamdunk proof of the environmental component of g, see this post:

http://www.gnxp.com/MT2/archives/004073.html

is anyone left who is still amazed how much the Big Three status indicators correlate? go to any party featuring the upper crust and one thing jumps out at you right away — everyone there is, on average, Hotter Smarter and Richer. genetics explains a lot how this comes to be. alphas sexually selecting other alphas. environmental remediations like No Child Left Behind will never level the playing field. it will just waste a lot of money and tempt educators to cheat the system.

btw, idiocracy is basically right in its theory of the dumb outbreeding the smart. recent studies show the fertility rate for sub-100 IQ women is about half a child higher than for 100+ IQ women. for men, it gets a little more complicated. high IQ men have more children than the average man. this is probably because of serial monogamy which allows high status men to trade up more often for younger fertile second and third wives and have children with them.

Never got a chance to see it due to the lame promotion it received from the studio so I watched a lot of clips on YouTube. Locally, there was talk it was killed bc of the ‘racial’ overtones it ‘may’ incite. Crazy.

That charge, in itself, is proof America is growing more stupid by the day.
