My SAT Score

Back in my day, the most you could get on the SAT was a 1600 (it’s 2400 now), and something like 1300 was considered to be a really good score where I came from. I knew I was going to the University of Maryland and only needed an 1100, so I bought a book that had ten sample exams, took three of them, and deemed myself ready. I got an 1140—mission accomplished. The breakdown:

Math: 670
Verbal: 470 (national average is 500)

I’m glad I didn’t get something like a 1480 because I would always question whether I’m living up to my SAT potential. When you get a verbal score like mine, just being able to finish a book and understand the big words means you’re doing pretty incredible. I have made big success in life!

You scored 30 points higher than me. My math score was also slightly higher than my verbal.

I’m the oracle. What I see happening in this post??

1. 20 people will post their scores, much higher than the avg to convince everybody their genius.
2. 15 of those people will say they had some sort of impairment that hindered them from getting even higher score
3. 0 of them will reveal being in massive student loan debt
4. 1 will reveal that the educational system is nothing but a tool for capitalism and corporations to measure, i.d., smart people that will grow their bottom line….

What’s sad is my fiance teaching below grade level 2nd graders concepts I learned my junior and senior years in the IB program at Richard Montgomery. Apparently teachers in MoCo can no longer grade homework, provide worksheets, use multiple choise, etc. It’s all about having the kids pass the state exams. Oh yea, and no dodgeball in gym class either.

Congratulations on your success! 😀

On a related tangent, I’m not sure I understand why so many people prepare so much for standardized tests. Doesn’t that devalue them as a sorting mechanism?

your verbal score is anomalous. your output here suggests an sat verbal at least 100 points higher.

a couple thoughts come to mind. one, the sat verbal (i think you took it after the re-norming) may do a poor job of measuring creative writing ability. word analogies are effective at teasing out g but not so much at identifying creativity.

two, it’s known that math ability in males, about 30 points higher on average than females, peaks early and heads south fast after age 30. verbal facility does the opposite, probably owing to patterns of usage and how verbal fluency accumulates over time.

470 in verbal? I would’ve never guessed by your current writing skills.

and I disagree that math ability decreases over time, because mine has increased from year to year.

i got exactly same score…only reversed…my math was pretty shitty and my verbal was pretty good for a foreigner (took me a while to make sure i spelled foreigner right)…funny how now i cant find the right word almost all the time, while i can count the average amount per notch (to the decimal point) in my head using 10 years of historical data…..

…the education system doesnt match up to real life skills…thats why we are considered “dumb americans”

You make an interesting point about how these scores seem to shadow you life. But what if the scores are wrong in terms of people who are creative? Such as you. And me.

I totally bombed out on the verbal SAT — I got something like barely 400. Twice. My parents forbade me to major in English because of that (they paid for college). Yet I wound up at a major daily newspaper and just happen to have written the cover of a major music magazine this month.

Clearly, my way of thinking did not work for the SAT folks, but did work in the real world.
Anyone else have an experience like this?

that is a good score for barely studying. Once you are in college nobody cares about you SAT scores. Go MoCo and UMD! I too am a MCPS and UMD grad. =) Here’s to not leaving the DC area!

I love the edit somebody made to the Springbrook Wikipedia article. Read the first few sentences under “Academic Programs” (pasted here for when it gets “fixed”):

“The rigorous International Baccalaureate (or IB) curriculum is a malicious program aimed at the unnaturally brighter population in an attempt to overload their brains, thus reducing them to vegetables without lives. Pros include mad bs’ing skills.”

let’s hear it for the 1140s.

did u grow up in Maryland/DC? if so, you need to move. imo, you can’t really know struggle until you know it outside of your hood, away from friends and family and everything that is familiar.

I thought I’d be able to head off the Borat jokes by pointing it out early on in the thread.

No dice.

I got a 1200 and never studied. I have no idea how that happened. I think I missed like 5 points on the verbal and basically bombed the math part.

I only applied to some Christian colleges my parents made me who accepted everyone that applied and James Madison who wait- listed me. Hello community college.

SATs are bullshit, I think. Out west they have the ACTs which I think are better.

i tutor the sats. smart people do better on the sats, because the sat is easier for them. rich people do better on the sat because they hire me!

Score somewhere around 1370 on the old scale. No studying. Will graduate in December with a JD/MBA. No debt. $40-50k in the bank. Suck it, Mr Boofu.

P.S. I am deaf, blind, mute, and have no arms. I took the SAT in braille with my feet.

P.P.S. Anyone want to weigh in on what they would do after graduation if they were in my position? I have no clue.

SAT’s really don’t matter in how successful you can be in life. Any moron can be rich. Hahahahhahahahhah
1139
highest in public high school
2nd highest in private school
2 sisters did way better than me in SAT

eugenius says,”…the education system doesnt match up to real life skills…thats why we are considered “dumb americans””
I beg to differ Sir, I just had 2 foreign nationals quite in the last two days because they could not and would not do my job. Saw me do reports I tried to teach them and they quit. I got a promotion and there’s noone to train to replace me. The office where I came from is overran with Indians with masters degrees. I am still getting e-mails from the supervisor for help lol
An American worker can work a foreiner under the table. The foreigner is used to 10 people to do 10 individual tasks. The American can do all ten tasks in stride.

I got a 1550 (800 math/750 verbal) and I wanted to go back and try again for the perfect score… Always enjoyed taking tests. I saw them as a way to show the teachers I was smart even without giving a shit about their classes.

Then I saw the Wiki entry for your HS. It talks about how the school “prides itself on its diversity.” And now I see why you said what you said.

Your score isn’t bad, but it’s not exceptional either. It’s close to what I got. You do seem to have done pretty well for yourself. Good for you.
